Joe Paterno tapped lightly on the table in front of him, smiled softly and sighed. The sigh was probably a tired, foreboding response to the multiple quarterback questions about to be fired at him during his Tuesday press conference. But he didn’t seem bothered. The head coach was introspective, calm, soft-spoken and ready to talk. His steady eyes and calm voice said he enjoyed the preseason practices up to that point, as if he carried a lesser burden. “Another year,” Paterno said after the 30-minute meeting with the media. It must seem like another year for the legendary coach, but it’s one unlike any other.

By now, I’m sure almost everyone knows about the controversy surrounding the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero, but how many people know about the “International Burn a Koran Day” that will take place Sept. 11? It is within our first amendment rights to express when, how and what we believe. However, it’s mind boggling to see that the bigotry of yesteryear still plagues our society and our views. From Japanese prison camps during the 40s to Jim Crow laws of the 60s to the Quran burning that will take place in just a few days — we can see that America is still as narrow minded as it was when our grandparents were children. If a group of Muslims were to publicly plan to burn Bibles, it would be blasphemy and surely a sign of underground terrorism

When I first heard the NCAA had denied Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s request for eligibility this year, I had a smug knee-jerk reaction. After all, Masoli led Oregon to the Rose Bowl last year and was a potential Heisman candidate this year, so without him, the Rebels are going to have a much tougher season, and our chances in the Egg Bowl have increased. And even when thinking objectively, I can’t really disagree with the decision. Masoli was clearly violation the spirit of the rules and exploiting a loophole. Nonetheless, does anyone honestly believe the NCAA would have denied Masoli’s request if he wanted to play at Texas or Alabama instead of a less prestigious team like Ole Miss? The corrupt NCAA cabal is out of control. The NCAA is run by the powerful elites who scoff at the notion of teams like MSU or Ole Miss having any success.

Students, faculty and fans of Mississippi State University attending football games now have to follows new rules regarding MSU’s longest tradition. The MSU cowbell is a symbol of the university and has been a part of MSU for more than 30 years, MSU President Mark Keenum said. “If we want to keep this tradition and preserve it, it is in the hands of those attending the games,” Keenum said. “The only way we can continue to have this tradition is if we all as Bulldogs want it.” The “Respect the Bell” campaign is encouraging fans to only ring their cowbells at the appropriate times. Fans are allowed to ring cowbells during pregame, time-out, halftime and after the Bulldogs score. Thomas Sellers, Student Association President, said this is an important time for the university because he wants to make sure we get to keep the tradition alive. “We have to respect the bell, because if we don’t, we’re going to lose it,” he said. “If you look at it in a positive light, then don’t look at what is being taken away, look at the advantage we have of being able to keep our tradition.” The 2010 football season will be a trial period to see if MSU can permanently keep the cowbell.

Minnesota wanted to run the ball more effectively this season, and Thursday night was a good start. The Gophers defeated Middle Tennessee State 24-17 Thursday night in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on three goal-line touchdown runs by senior fullback Jon Hoese, including the game winner with 3:09 left. Junior running back Duane Bennett led the way all night with a career-high 187 yards on 30 carries, the most yards or carries for a Gophers rusher since Amir Pinnix’s 206 yards and 34 carries against Purdue in 2006. In all, Minnesota ran the ball 66 times for 281 yards, including freshman Donnell Kirkwood’s 50 yards on 11 carries and junior Deleon Eskridge’s 12 carries for 40 yards. That’s a good sign for a Minnesota team that finished last in the Big Ten in rushing each of the past two years. The Gophers dominated the time of possession battle, controlling the ball for more than 75 percent of the game while the Blue Raiders, playing without suspended star quarterback Dwight Dasher, didn’t have a drive lasting longer than two minutes, 16 seconds
